Message from the Tennis Section Chairman

Dear [[firstname]]

It has been a busy few months since I assumed the position of Chair of your tennis committee. Here are the headlines.

We have a new Tennis Director

We are extremely pleased to appoint Erwan Nicolas as our new Tennis Director. We are in the process of finalising his start date, which will be made known to all soon! Erwan’s duties and responsibilities include strengthening the tennis experience for all members, organising coaching sessions, managing the coaches, improving the junior programme, and ensuring that the tennis section maintains a healthy financial bank-balance! I am sure you will agree with me when I say that we have sorely missed a tennis director. It has taken a number of months to fill this position. We placed an advertisement with the LTA and used personal contacts that, combined, elicited some 17 candidates. A two stage selection process reduced the 17 to 3 excellent candidates and the TENCOM selection panel chose Erwan. I take this opportunity to thank non-TENCOM members who sat on the selection panel (Tony Tripp, Mandy Skinner and Michael Latham); their help and advice was invaluable.

We have new members!

As court usage during off peak hours was low we offered membership to 297 people on the off-peak waiting list in 7 waves and 87 chose to take up the offer. Some of the new members are really good as I found out at my cost during a Friday social! It was difficult to return their serve! We also were able to accept a small number of new peak members (5 in total). All new members will be inducted on Friday the 3rd of March

The Junior programme will expand

The Tennis Committee is aware that the junior programme is underdeveloped, but has the potential to expand. This we intend to happen. The Tennis Director will take charge of directing the expansion of this programme in the near future. Fortunately we are pleased to report that this income increased during the last term following changes made by Tennis Committee to the times and hours devoted to the programme. We plan for this trajectory to be maintained; a strengthened programme with improved revenues, implemented by coaches overseen by the new Tennis Director.

Tennis Committee numbers

As you know we have gone to you (tennis section members) to ask your opinion as regards the numbers that constitute Tennis Committee. I hereby report that the vote related to reducing the number from ten to eight was 260 in favour and 54 against, so the motion has been carried.

Tennis Section AGM

The Tennis Section AGM will be held in person on Monday the 3rd of April at 7.00pm in The Lake Room. There are places available at the TENCOM table and we will be inviting applications in the near future. We will be making a further announcement in due course

Best wishes

Dr Nicholas J O Miles

Tennis Section Chairman
