TWC Tennis Newsletter - May 2024 from Erwan Nicolas

Dear TWC Members,

We are getting ready for our “Wimbledon Summer Period” and everything is coming to life!
The grass courts will be opening soon, some key events will be organised for all members, juniors and adults, leading to our summer season. Do read our weekly emailed newsletter to keep up to date.

Thank you all for your feedback about the tennis section and life at TWC. We do take notice! Rosanna and Bailey are working intensively to ensure the delivery of quality and reliable services. Please do pop into the office at any time.

Lastly, please allow me to welcome the 50 new off-peak members who just joined TWC, which we introduced last Friday to the club. I am sure that they will enjoy the club as much as we all do.

1- My full year overview

It has been a delight to look back at this year and so many memories come to my mind; from social events, team practices and matches, the youth tennis programme, the Rafa Nadal Academy visit, Cameron Norrie’s Babolat event and all those important interactions with you, in the office or at the bar.

Since March 2023, my aim has been to create a team of coaches and administrators embracing our club values, and supporting each member as best they can to enjoy tennis and life at our club. There are always things that can be improved, and we are constantly looking towards the future and what improvements are needed and feasible.

A huge amount of work has been achieved, and I would like to thank the committee members for their confidence and trust in me and the administrative and coaching teams. The coaching team has delivered unconditional support to the club and members, and have worked whatever the weather. A particular thanks to Bailey, our Junior Head Coach and Rosanna, our new Tennis Administrator.

2- Our Sponsor partner’s team is getting BIGGER

We always look ways to increase support for the tennis section, and welcome new sponsors who believe in TWC values, ethos and passion. Financial support obtained from sponsors helps you access the services of our coaches, with discounted fees for various sessions, and even some free ones. So a big ‘thank you’ to LONEY MILLER, estate agent in Southfields, WIMBLEDON PARK SPORTS, sport retail tennis specialist, and The TENNIS ART GALLERY, official tennis shop at Wimbledon Park station. Thank you for your trust and confidence. Please do visit them with your TWC membership.

3- The Championships Wimbledon 2024

The Championships are getting closer, and it appropriate to remind members that our grass courts are not fit for professional players. Our ground staff work very hard to keep the courts in good condition. The foundation of these courts, however, is too soft to support high-intensity and repetitive actions that characterise professional play. I do understand the frustration it can create, with some of our member’s well connected to the professional world. Nevertheless, the courts are only to be used by TWC members.

I will, however, always be happy if you want to share the club by bringing a top professional player to visit us and for a quick talk with our members or those on the junior programme, and I will be delighted to assist you. Any other guest is, of course, welcome under your supervision; the usual TWC T&C and checks will apply.

Please also remember that no coaching lead session are held during the time of the Championship. Furthermore, as you probably know, Church Road is closed to cars during the Championship. You can still access TWC but you must have your car permit clearly displayed in your windscreen.

4- The Junior Youth program and schools

Huge activity is happening with the half term coming up for all juniors and the summer camps 2024 are ready for participants! Don’t miss out on our great TWC summer programme running for 5 weeks from the 29th of July until the 23rd of August 2024.

TWC is proud to support the school programme at The Study and Kings Primary since the Easter period. If you would like us to engage with your child’s school, please do let me know.

We will organise an end of year celebration on the 28th of June, with a BABOLAT day experience. Please make a note of this in your diary! Surely a memorable day to come.

5- The Club Championship finals: Saturday 15th of June.

There is only one month to go before the grand finals’ day! Please do make sure that you complete each round by the required deadline, and if you need help, let us know. Thank you for all those who have contacted us and kept us posted but please do ensure you are on track and communicate with your next opponent. The finals will be starting at 10 am on the day and we plan to use the grass courts for these great matches. Please also book your place for the free ceremony prizes party at 7 pm by emailing Rosanna admin@twctennis.co.uk

6- Your club Q & A

i. Should I add the name of the players when booking a court? Yes, we need to know who is playing for Health and Safety reasons, in case of an emergency we need to account for everyone in the Club. It is possible to book a court and select ‘Tennis Awaiting Partner’ but you must update this prior to arriving at the court.

ii. What is the latest time I can play on grass? 8 pm

iii. What time is the club closing? 10.30 pm on the courts and main gate 11 pm.

iv. Is there a recycling point for tennis balls. Yes, a tennis ball bin is in the main entrance of the club. These balls are sent to Recycaball.com to be used for different purposes rather than ending up in landfill.

v. Can friends attend camps? Yes, friends can join the Holiday Adult and Junior Camps without being a TWC member.

vi. I am running late for a session- Can I still join? You are welcome.

vii. I am double paying for the guest booking. What should I do? Edit your booking. You should pay the correct Guest Fee for your first half hour slot. For the additional slots you book, select ‘Tennis Guest Fee Paid’. This will amend the amount you paid.

viii. Should I advise my guest about the dress code? Please ensure your guests are wearing tennis kit with tennis shoes. Please do not wear pimple tennis shoes on any court.

7- The Summer Box League.

The current box league run will finish on 31st May. We will take a break whilst we concentrate on the Club Championships. We will look to restart the next run-on Monday 22 July until Monday 30 September. You need to complete at least 3 matches to remain in the Box League the next time.

8- Grass court Opening

The latest reading of the Grass court on the 09/05/24 at 10 am, indicating the moisture in the sole remains very high. Court 1,2,3 indicating an average of 36 while court 3,4,5 raising to 40. The playability level is 25. The environmental agency has issued in our area a red warning status, which indicate that the water level is higher than expected.

As it stands, our groundman team is not able to prepare them properly. Unfortunately, more rain is expected next week so we will keep you updated for the expected date of opening by the end of next week.

Look forward to see you around

Kind Regards.
Erwan.
