SQUASH: Update - Courts, Showers, Match Play, Membership

Dear [[firstname]],

I hope you are well.

As we move towards the latter part of the summer and get closer to what we recognise to be the start of squash season, I wanted to update you on what your Squash Committee are currently focusing on.

ROAD MAP TO A RETURN TO NORMAL MATCH PLAY

We are now 4 weeks on from England Squash (squash’s national governing body) announcing that clubs could re-open their courts, with specific playing guidelines around how we could do so safely. For the majority of us this has meant play has been limited to ‘sides’ or prescribed routines. Speaking with many, I know you have enjoyed getting back on court in any form but that it would be good to understand how long these guidelines will be in place. Equally for others I know the guidelines are a cause of frustration and aren’t a substitute for full squash.

As we move forward it is vital for squash clubs to have sight of these plans to be able to plan effectively for the future. We have therefore written to England Squash asking for visibility of their road map for how and when squash will restart (I have shared the note with you below the body of this update). In the meantime, please keep following the guidelines for all our safety.

SHOWERS AND CHANGING ROOMS

I’m pleased to say that showering facilities are now available, albeit with a limit on the number of people allowed to use at any one time. Thanks for those who fed back that they would like the showers opened - we were then able to get this action agreed with the General Committee.

COURT REFURBISHMENT AND VIEWING ENVIRONMENT

There has been overwhelmingly positive feed back about the quality of the newly refurbished courts. Every aspect of every court has been refurbished.

Bright, new LEDs have replaced the old fluorescent bulbs and a brand new substructure under the floors has been installed to reduce impact. All walls have been skimmed and glass balconies have replaced the former block-work in the gallery upstairs. The extractors have recently been checked to ensure they are recycling the air a minimum of 4 times per hour as advised by England Squash. They are highly efficient and are changing the volume of air on every court far in excess of what is stipulated.

In the last week the walls above the out of court lines and the ceilings have been repainted. Not quite the Sistine Chapel but certainly making a big impact, the ceiling has been done for the first time in 20 years. You will notice the difference!

Next, attention moves to painting of the downstairs and upstairs viewing areas plus completion of some snagging work on the courts. All painting will be completed by the end of August after which we will move on to the final phase of the renovation.

Automated lights are to be installed that will be linked to the online booking system, resolving the need to visit the bar to request the lights to be switched on. Finally the camera on court four will be replaced and relocated. The new camera and recording system will allow members to record their matches, lessons or practice sessions for later online review.

A thank you again to the Club for enabling the work to go ahead and a special mention to Dean Hughes who has been handling the liaison for the onsite operational aspects of the work.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

Traditionally membership renewals have been 1st September of each year. With the General Committee’s support, we have decided this year to move renewals to October, providing an additional month of membership for free in recognition of the disruption to playing squash that has taken place due to the pandemic. I will write again to you at the end of the month with further details about the approach for this year’s membership renewals.

Regards,

Tom Goulden
Squash Chairman
