Social Tennis Update

Dear Members,

I want to thank all those members who attend our weekly TWC peak / off-peak social mix-ins. These mix-ins are integral to the tennis experience at TWC. We always monitor the performance of tennis programmes, such as the mix-ins, and listen to the concerns of members. Please note the following:

1. Sign-in: The sign-in procedure has been successful and will be retained. The procedure ensures that social mix-ins can be structured in a way that maximises play for each person, and highlights the need for coaches to manage the session if a minimum number of members have signed in. It has been agreed that signing in for social mix-ins is not mandatory but if less than eight people sign-in a coach will not be provided. Signing in helps everyone and we do hope that members recognise this fact and will continue to conform to the procedure.

2. New balls: We hope that social mix-in participants have seen the benefit of the provision of new balls every Saturday

3. The use of grass courts: As from the date of this email, coach and member led social mix-in sessions will be allowed to use the grass courts if they are not booked by members at the time of the social mix-in session. For peak social mix-ins any coach that runs the session (assuming eight of more members have signed in) can, on the day and at the time the social mix-in commences, use all six grass courts for the social mix-in if they can see that the grass courts over and above the three always allocated to peak social mix-ins are empty and have not been booked by other members. Only the available courts can be booked; bookings by non-social mix-in members on the three ‘extra’ grass courts (those not automatically reserved for social mix-in) will take priority. This ruling will ensure court use maximisation, and will be monitored to assess its effectiveness.

4. Friday social mix-in: the possibility of introducing a new social mix-in session on Fridays was raised by Nicholas Miles (Chair of TENCOM) during the most recent AGM meeting. Whether the membership would like to see a Friday mix-in was a question listed on the recent membership survey. The response was very positive. Hence, we are pleased to announce that a Friday social mix-in (4 to 6 pm) will be introduced. The date when this new social mix-in will commence has yet to be determined. Members will be informed in a timely manner.

The care of ALL members within ALL programmes (Juniors, Adults, Socials, Teams) is the priority of TWC, as mentioned by Nicholas Miles our chairman during our recent AGM. A balance has to be struck between the competing demands and concerns of the memberships. We are confident that the right balance has been struck, though, as said above, we always monitor the operation and performance of programmes to ensure, as far as possible, that the correct balance is maintained and thus the tennis experience at TWC is strengthened for the vast majority of members.

Offering more options to play with a diversity of players, encouraging new members, and supporting members as they develop their tennis skills in a friendly and structured environment, while respecting the history of the club, is our priority. We have an exciting future programme including a significant strengthening of junior tennis (involving the employment of a new junior tennis head coach). We hope all members will recognise a strengthened and perhaps slightly changed tennis experience in the future. Creating and passing on 'an excellent tennis experience' to the next generation is an important aim of those who administer the tennis section

Thank you again all for participating in your TWC programme and opening up to others.

Enjoy your tennis.

Erwan Nicolas (Tennis Director) and Nicholas Miles (TENCOM chair)
