Squash: Facilities and maintenance update

Dear [[firstname]],

Nearly two months have now passed since the club closed its doors and the squash courts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The squash committee are very closely monitoring the situation and will be ready to reopen the courts at the first opportunity, safely and without risk to members and staff.

It is very encouraging to see other sports opening up at TWC.

The tennis courts are now getting good use with a surge in off-peak bookings helped along by beautiful weather.

Recently issued guidelines from the ECB outlining how a return to cricket in a club setting will look means that our beautifully maintained outfield, courtesy of the continued hard work by our ground staff, will be back in action this week .

Clearly squash in the UK will have to wait a little longer before we can get back but there is light.

Several countries in Europe have made a return. Switzerland, Poland and Italy have reopened their courts. Former TWC Surrey Cup player Scott Fitzgerald, now settled in Padova, has written an interesting article which can be found at Squash Mad https://squashmad.com/breaking-news/scott-fitzgerald-how-squash-returned-in-italy/ detailing how squash has progressed from coach supervised solo practice only, to structured routines that ensure a 2m distance between players is maintained at all times.

It is the ability to keep the spacing and still play that has been the key to unlocking our sport’s return in Europe and critically the relaying of that fact to governments. We are in touch with England Squash and have been assured that they are doing their best to convey that message.

Those who are finding each day without squash too much to bare and in need of their squash fix should search Instagram (after first following twcsquash of course) for Racketupsquash. There you'll find some entertaining squash related exercises or elitesquash for some balance and coordination exercises from Mohamed Elshorbagy's coach.

The period of closure has provided a great opportunity for essential court maintenance to be carried out. The courts will be in their best ever condition when we do make a return.

The club will be ready to meet the public health requirements and to give guidance to members on safe play as soon as squash gets the green light. We look forward to that day.

We hope to see you back very soon.

Regards

Tom Goulden,
Squash Chairman
