Dear [[firstname]],
Still languishing in the relegation zone, the men’s first team need points and some wins urgently if they are to remain in division one next season.
Their first match of the second half last Wednesday initially looked a tough place to start their comeback campaign.
It was an important match for both sides. Colets, former league winners on numerous occasions, need to close the gap on division leaders Colets and TWC is fighting to stay out of the relegation zone.
A strong away team was duly brought across in order to effect their mission and as TWC were without their top one and two strings due to Covid, it seemed that a straight forward 5-0 win for Colets was on the cards.
Fifth strings had agreed in advance to play first. Stacey was paired against Rory Pennell a former PSA Tour player who reached 135 in the world. The first two games went quickly to TWC and the third was all about whether the 19 year age gap was going to start to make a difference. Fortunately Stacey just held on to close out the third and put TWC 1-0 up.
On court 3 TWC’s Hasnaat Farooqi was facing Nick Mulvey. A superb performance and 3-1 win from Hasnaat gave TWC an unexpected 2-0 match lead.
Gary Nisbet was next up for TWC but could not make any real inroads against a solid Ruudi Clarke and went down 3-0 despite a great effort.
The last two matches would involve Club Professional Jordan Warne taking on former world number 8 and England captain Daryl Selby in the top rubber and Michael Mattimore, making his TWC debut, playing Rui Soares ranked 65 in the world.
Wins in the last two matches were not expected, it was about whether a game here or there could be taken to gain much needed points.
New team player Michael put everything into the first game against Rui who is one of the most efficient movers and quickest players in the modern game and it paid dividends. A close 13-11 first game win to TWC was a brilliant result gaining us a valuable point. The physical effort required for Michael to keep pace could not be maintained across the full match and Rui took the next three games.
With the match score at 2-2 Jordan stepped on court to face one of the most experienced players in the world. Daryl, now semi-retired has had a long and successful career playing tournaments all over the world for more than 20 years. He spent most of his career in and around the top 10 in the world and aged 39 is still a hugely formidable opponent.
With everything to gain and nothing to lose Jordan started well but mistakes crept in too early. Daryl began to pull away but only due to the errors and it wasn’t until the third game, with Jordan now 2-0 down, that the match started to deliver.
Point for point until 8-8 Jordan had settled into his task, was playing thoughtful error-free squash and putting Daryl under pressure. The final few rallies were well contested but saw Daryl close out the next three points in a row and the match 3-0 securing an overall 3-2 victory for Colets.
The result of this match has pushed TWC up the points table but at this stage the risk of demotion still looms.
Our next men’s home fixture is on 20th January against David Lloyd Purley. Please put the date in the diary and come along to support.
LADIES 1st TEAM: Home match tomorrow, Thursday 13th Jan
When TWC’s top ladies team is able to field its best players we have one of the strongest teams in Surrey but regularly getting our strongest team together has proved tougher than anticipated.
Our first string Bruna Marchesi, ranked inside the top 100 in the world, sadly suffered a very serious knee injury early into the season requiring her to return to Brazil for an operation and Covid infections have stopped our other top players from playing key fixtures.
These setbacks mean there is ground to make up in the second half, starting tomorrow evening.
Our line-up for the first home match of the second half against Reigate will feature our top 4 players:
1. Kace Bartley
2. Emmeline Gale
3. Emily Mennie
4. Ayesha Adnan
The match will start at 7.30 tomorrow night and a supportive home crowd would definitely be appreciated by the team.
Please note that there will be another home match next week on 18th January versus Colets.
Regards,
Stacey Ross
